Suggested Guidelines for Progression of Skills:


1- Adding ‘ing’ to verbs
2- Investigate and learn to use the spelling pattern ‘le’
3- To recognise and spell common prefixes and know their meanings – un, de, dis, re, pre
4- Use above prefixes with root words to make new words
5- Changing words when ‘er’ and ‘est’ are added
6- Changing words when ‘y’ is added
7- Basic rules when adding ‘s’ to words
8- Silent letters
9- Recognise and generate compound words
10- Recognise and spell common suffixes – ‘ly’, ‘full’, ‘less’
11- Use above suffixes with root words to make new words
12- To use the apostrophe to spell shortened words
13- Identify short words within longer words to aid spelling
14- To recognise and spell prefixes and know their meanings – mis, non, ex, co, anti
15- Use above prefixes with root words to make new words
16- To use the apostrophe to spell further contracted words
17- Explore homonyms and how they can be distinguished by looking at their context
18- To spell two syllable words with double consonant – bubble/kettle/common
19- Spelling of common homophones
20- To spell regular verb endings – linked to work on tenses
21- To spell irregular tense changes
22- Recognise and spell common suffixes – ‘al’, ‘ary’, ‘ic’
23- Recognise and spell common suffixes – ‘ship’, ‘hood’, ‘ness’, ‘ment’
24- How to change nouns into verbs
25- What happens to words ending in ‘f’ when suffixes are added
26- Spell words with common endings – ‘ight’, ‘sion’, ‘ious’, ‘ial’, ‘ough’
27- To recognise and spell prefixes and know their meanings – ad, af, al, a
28- Explore occurrence of certain letters within words, such as v or k
29- Explore occurrence of certain letter strings within words, such as wa, wo, ss
30- Spell common letter strings with different pronunciations – ough, ear, ight, ou, au, ice
31- Collect and classify words with common roots
32- Practise extending and compounding words
33- Recognise and spell suffixes – ible, able, ive, tion, sion
34- To distinguish between its and it’s

41- Explore spelling patterns of consonants and formulate rules
42- To investigate further words with same letter string but different pronunciation
43- To distinguish between homophones
44- Correct use and spelling of common pronouns
45- Recognise and spell a range of suffixes
46- To spell polysyllabic words with unstressed vowels and consonants
47- To investigate and learn spelling rules
48- To transform words by changing tense, modifying them, comparing them etc.
49- To recognise the meaning of and use a range of prefixes
50- To use root words, prefixes and suffixes as an aide to spelling
51- To investigate meanings and spellings of connectives
52- Revise and extend work on spelling polysyllabic words with unstressed vowels and consonants
