 Plural of Words Ending in O

1. Words ending with a vowel (a e i o u) + O we always add -S

radio - radios
patio - patios
zoo - zoos
kangaroo - kangaroos
tattoo - tattoos
audio - audios
cameo - cameos
cuckoo - cuckoos
ratio - ratios
stereo - stereos
video - videos
studio - studios


2. When a word ends in a consonant + O we can add -s, -es, or both.

First, let's look at adding -S to some words.

a. We always add -s to the following words:
solo - solos
piano- pianos
ego - egos
zero - zeros (but some dictionaries allow -es zeroes!!!)

b. We add -s to some new words to English - photos, radios, stereos.

c. We add -s to short forms/abbreviations - kilos, photos, logos, typos,
memos, pros

d. We add -s to words from other languages - tacos, sombreros, solos,
concertos, stilettos, sopranos


3. We add -es to the following words that came into English
centuries ago:

tomato - tomatoes
potato - potatoes
hero - heroes
mosquito - mosquitoes
veto - vetoes
echo - echoes
domino - dominoes
torpedo - torpedoes
embargo - embargoes


4. We have some words ending in O that can be spelled with
either -s or -es

cargo- cargos / cargoes
mango - mangos / mangoes
motto - mottos / mottoes
memento - mementos / mementoes
banjo - banjos / banjoes
volcano - volcanos / volcanoes
buffalo - buffalos / buffaloes
tornado - tornados / tornadoes
flamingo - flamingos / flamingoes
fresco - frescos / frescoes
ghetto - ghettos / ghettoes
halo - halos / haloes
zero - zeros or zeroes ( some dictionaries allow -es spelling!!)
